At the 2019 Australian Motoring Awards in January, the Ford Ranger Raptor took home the 4×4 of the Year Award. The Australian Motoring Awards, a joint effort between several top auto magazines, honor the best cars in the categories of performance, style, and off-road capability.
4×4 Australia names the 4×4 of the Year, and this year it was an extremely close call between two Ford Rangers: the Ranger Raptor and the Ranger XLT. Ford’s Australian off-road trucks deliver the best performance around — the fact that the Raptor and XLT were head and shoulder above the rest of the pack is proof of that.
The Ranger Raptor debuted last year, and while it won’t be available in the US for probably a few years, American off-road enthusiasts are watching it closely. Sporting a 2.0-liter Bi-Turbo diesel engine paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission, the Ranger Raptor puts out 369 lb-ft of torque, giving it unbeatable power on rough terrain.
WhichCar.com, one of the auto sites involved in the Australian Motoring Awards, praised the Ranger Raptor for “not trying to be all things to all men.” Instead of making a truck that transitions from suburb streets to backroad trails, Ford has given the Ranger Raptor an incredible suspension that allows for “an enormously fun-to-drive, competent and capable recreational 4×4 dual-cab.”
While the Ranger Raptor isn’t available yet, you can check out the F-150 Raptor at North Brothers Ford.
